Just reading an article reviewing human and canine epilepsy and this ketogenic or a modified atkins came up as quickly effective of 50% and 29% seizure reduction on the diets. Re the lafora's disease, is it just those 3 breeds or does this epilepsy respond in other breeds as well. I use Hills B/D for my hypercholesterol ''CVA'' Basenji cohort so it might be an idea to trial it if any of the many dachs clients get into trouble as well. Re the occular cardiac reflex- works well in puppies to slow the hr down enough to hear the heart properly in a really rapid hr young pup but not had thought about using it in seizure issues. tx Aine

RE: Ketogenic diets and Vagal nerve stimulator devices in epilepsy

I'm not sure if it counts for all forms of epilepsy, but LaFora's disease in dachshunds, beagles and bassets is a carbohydrate storage disease affecting neurons, so low carbohydrate diets is advocated in these cases.

As for idiopathic epilepsy (which I think the majority of animal epilepsy is), I'm not sure it would make a huge difference.

RE: Ketogenic diets and Vagal nerve stimulator devices in epilepsy

In terms of vagal nerve , I was lead to believe digital eyeball pressure ie over lid applying firm steady pressure for a moment or two, was used to increase vagal tone and had been shown to reduce seizure activity.
