Wanted to pick the collective brain before I have to see one of our more challenging clients tomorrow morning with one of her chickens. She told the receptionist she has researched it and it has thrush so wants the vet to give her the powder

RE: thrush in a chicken
Do you use metronidazole for trichomonas? What dose do you use as I can find one for rafters and pigeons but not chickens
Hi,

there is another thread recently on this very topic and the short answer is no, Metronidazole is a banned drug in chickens and there is no available alternative for treating Trich,

Ah, the art of veterinary medicine - "coma, huddling and death..." is all I can remember from the very few poultry lectures I had!

I believe it was turkey, goose, chicken and duck and very nice it was too!

I'll leave the serious stuff to Marie, especially as we are doing our annual 'chicken run' to a local special needs farm to check on the welfare of the stock on Thursday I might learn something. Fortunately I have a nurse who knows more about chickens than I do so just bluff and take cues from her.

RE: thrush in a chicken

On our system it just comes up under nystatin dome

RE: thrush in a chicken

Thanks Marie

Is there a trade name or does it just come up as nystatin if I ask the nurses to order it in?

RE: thrush in a chicken

Oh, right - I thought this was Jamie Oliver's latest roast-dinner extravaganza - thrush inside a chicken inside a turkey inside an emu sort-of-thing.

I'd probably use povidone-iodine topically, meds in water are most unreliable, especially in a patient with mouth (?beak) pain.

If it is Candida then I would opt for Nystatin- we can order it of an evening and have it the next day from our wholesalers. You may have the option to return it if her diagnosis is wrong!! I would avoid systemic antifungals given the potential for side effects especially hepatotoxicity.
