She also has a daughter with diabetes. Being a bit fed up with syringes, she would like to know if an "insulin pen" device as used by her daughter could be suitable for a cat.

regarding if you could use it effectively- answer is yes

regarding insulin availability- lente insulin is lente insulin pretty much so the human preparations could be used. Dosage same

regarding cascade: if you can make a good case as to why the pen is the only practical option you should be fine (and who would report you to the VMD anyway??). Classic example is having difficulty measuring small volumes (pens are easier to calibrate), owner having hand problems (old lady with arthritis) or vision problems (many human diabetics are blind so the pens measure with clicks)

HTH. We got a pen from the chemist with some empty glass vials and filled them ourselves from a bottle on insulin. It worked OK when I used it but the owner's couldn't get the hang of it and the cat was pts. Not tried it again for 6 - 7 years though.

Re: Insulin pen for diabetic cat?

I will ask the owner who probably knows more about these things than me, but that looks more like an aid for injecting with syringe than what I thought an insulin pen to be.

But I will ask and if we try it I will report back.

Re: Insulin pen for diabetic cat?

Hi Evelyn,

I've had a catalogue in this morning with an insulin pen in it - claims to be suitable for animals. You may need to get special syringes (they're in the catalogue too!) but it may be worth a go. The catalogue is Veterinary Speciality Products, Summer 2009. You've probably got it as well, but in case not, their number is 01948 780624. If you do use it, would you mind letting us know how you get on?

Thanks!

Re: Insulin pen for diabetic cat?

Aaaaahhh..... Anyone else tried them?

Re: Insulin pen for diabetic cat?

I looked into getting one of these for a client before but I think when it arrived it wasn't suitable because the vials of insulin we use didn't fit into it. I think that with lente or PZI insulins there may be a problem with making sure it's adequately resuspended also. That was about 3 years ago, I don't know if things have changed since - I'd be happy to be corrected if they have!
