I would still consider PLT a pretty much end stage drug and it has more than its fair share of mild to moderate side effects. Mostly steroid type.

The five gastric bleeds suggests possible unofficial ibuprofen supplementation or possibly not enough of a wash out period after finishing other drugs. Or bad luck of course!

RE: PLT in dogs

We were never taught about PLT at vet school but I learned about it "on the job" in my first practice (where I was also forced to learn Fahrenheit as boss refused to have Celsius thermometers in the practice.... old school!).

I have found it to be a wonder drug for end stage OA - ie after we have gone through 3 different NSAIS plus pardale and amantadine/tramadol and there is still reduced QOL. I imagine if we could look in the joints the PLT would be more effective in cases where there is basically no cartilage left and no joint fluid.

However Considering I must have put less than 20 dogs on the drug I have had 5 fatal gastric bleeds which I have attributed to the PLT. Anecdotal evidence only, and of course these are older dogs with numerous problems who are less likely to recover from a bleed anyway. We also had a case that needed tail amputation recently and ended up with a terrible non-healing wound, I blamed the PLT but could have been wrong.

I've also used it in dogs with OA that have asthma/Westie lung or skin problems, and added in extra preds when needed which has worked well.

I use Pardale V and start at around two tablets, three times daily for a typical labrador. Review after a short time (5-7 days) and abandon if no effect or consider reducing the dose a little if possible. I always use paracetamol as second drug - when the response to long term NSAID, usually meloxicam or carprophen in my hands, is becoming inadequate. I am aware of the licensing implications but neither Tramadol nor GabaP are licensed at all and nothing has been trialled in combination and that is what we are doing in this scenario.

I use PLT occasionally and know it to be dramatically effective in some cases. However, in my experience long term use of PLT is often associated with obesity and muscle weakness - in the dear dark days beyond recall when many clinicians used it as first choice for any and all stiff dogs, I came across a lot of dogs that appeared Cushingoid, had abnormal ACTH stim and Dex suppression test results and then improved markedly when weaned off their PLT and given a standard NSAID instead.

RE: PLT in dogs
The data sheet for Pardale only allows about 5 days at a time.
I'd love to see the experimental evidence for that.

Actually the directive is even more severe...

Strange, considering it's an over the counter medicine for humans, as is the codeine, and they can take it for much longer, willy nilly.

I also thought vivitonin helped a great deal , I thought she was depressed due to pain but think it was actually loss of cognitive function making her slow

RE: PLT in dogs

PLT is a great option for when the nsaids don't do much anymore; definitely for the calcified neeve root neuro issue ones. Longterm we tend to taper the dose - often the cost also has an influence on this, though have not seen any significant side effects.

RE: PLT in dogs

PLT almost always gave a dramatic and immediate vast improvement when clients complained of the cost or efficacy of the "modern" alternatives.

Always my first line until I stopped in about 2010. Don't think I can ever recall any side-effects.

PS Gotta be win for a dinoceutical [was VERY cheap, not now though...]
