(I wouldn't want her left at all, but am I in the minority?). If you have strong contractions, how long would you leave her before you advised intervention if no

RE: whelping bitch

I advise no more than half an hour of non productive straining, if not getting on with it by then, there is a problem.

In addition if part of a baby is protruding, then no more than 20 minutes is allowed.

I'm not too worried by fairly lengthy rests between pups, but green or yellow discharge (meconium suggests foetal distress) needs intervention asap.

i got these figures years ago out of the previous BSAVA manual of reproduction, not sure if they have changed but it makes it much easier to give advice confidently.

You cannot make clients take your advice, but be sure to make good notes, on the clinical record if possible, or on separate paper and transfer to the clinical history as soon as you can. We record the calls as well, so make a note of the time of the call too. If a client doesn't follow advice and things go wrong, they often start to lie.

RE: whelping bitch

I tend to go for 30 minutes of proper pushing, as most pups should be at least visible within this time. And probably 2 hours between pups as long as bitch is happy. And as Gillian says, green discharge means they are seen immediately. I have had working dog owners who go to bed and then see what has been born by morning....

RE: whelping bitch

One hour of active straining, immediately if any green discharge, 3 hours between pups.
