One of my nurse's cats presented on Monday with LH lameness. He is a 16yr old Mn DLH with a grade 1/6 murmur but otherwise very well. He had an acute soft tissue swelling of the left metatarsal, FNA revealed no pus etc from the most swollen

RE: Cranioventral thoracic mass and metatarsal swelling in 16 year old cat
I can see a soft tissue density cranial to the heart on the lateral and a small mass just to the Left of the mediastinum on the DV. any ideas greatly appreciated.
I'm wondering if what we're seeing is changes to the cardiac silhouette caused by enlargement of the pulmonary artery?

Replying to me own post! I've been reading through the notes from some CPD on cardiology I did a couple of weeks ago, and there is mention of aortic bulge on the cardiac silhouette as an incidental finding in older cats.

RE: Cranioventral thoracic mass and metatarsal swelling in 16 year old cat

Hypertrophic osteopathy (aka Marie's disease)

Do you have an AP view, which should show characteristic changes? Since the entire leg isn't AP I'm just wondering whether a very slight rotation may be disguising early new bone formation?

If it's genuinely a purely soft tissue swelling, are there 2 seperate conditions?

Did you send the fna off to a lab for cytology? I had a similar-ish case that had haemangiosarcoma. (We found the probably primary in the chest when met hunting but he presented just with an odd distal limb swelling)
