I though fructoseamine was pretty safe.. but I don`t think the cat was chronically stressed , just when we were trying to get the blood sample...had to drug it down to get it.

I will have to see what the fructoseamine says first ,do a paired if it`s positive then... but it is still fairly unlikely for a 3 year lod cat with diabetes I suppose...I would`nt mind a reference for that article though.

So then next step would be FIP, FIV and FELV testing .... gonna cost that poor owner...

Re: Feline juvenile diabetes..?

We had a similar case a few years ago that indeed turned out to have FIP. Definitley keep that i nmind. as others have pointed out, in cats you can get marked stress hyperglycaemia - I have had >20 on more than one occasion.

Take home message is stress is enough to increase glucose enough to elevate fructosamine and fructosamine only shows last few DAYS of high glucose - unlike dogs and humans. Stress or on going infections/conditions could therefore also elevate fructosamine and confuse diagnosis. Worth taking paired samples.

I can give you reference if interested.

Re: Feline juvenile diabetes..?

Yeah that sounds like a plan ,should do a snap test for FIV-FELV , but i think the wormer (drontal) should have some effect on toxo too....i hope that`s not it since the owner is pregnant....

Re: Feline juvenile diabetes..?

Agreed.. most diabetics I've seen have glucose in excess of 20 and even stress induced can be that high or higher. Would confirm with fructosamine but look into further diagnostics before roids! Urine sample would be relatively easy, free catch useful but cysto better. Certainly investigate other causes of the uveitis as recommended above.

Re: Feline juvenile diabetes..?

I think 14 could still be stress induced, but fructosamine would rule diabetes out-also sounds like you need urine-volumes/SG and dipstick and definately rule out viruses FIV/FeLV, look for toxo, all could cause uveitis.
