Been treating a 9-year-old MN Miniature Schnauzer for diabetes since the end of December 2015. Initially presented PUPD, weight loss, wetting in house. BG 33.9mmol/l, cholesterol 10.6, urine glucose ++++, urine ketones -ve.

There is a tangent discussion on this in recent thread on mucocoele and hyperlidipaemia. The W.A.T. organ insulin resistance has to play a part here in this patient as well one would suspect.

RE: Hypertriglyceridaemia Diabetic Miniature Schnauzer

I have also heard ( sorry I can't remember where) of using high levels of EFA's to treat hypertriglyceridaemia. I remember it seems to be counter-intuitive to feed an oil and a low fat diet.

I would also keep checking the cPL, it will be very prone to developing pancreatitis.

RE: Hypertriglyceridaemia Diabetic Miniature Schnauzer

Hi Mair,

I agree that it can sometimes be difficult to determine if a triglyceride level is a cause or effect of a disease but in a mini Schnauzer with that kind of trig level I would be very suspicious that it is a contributing factor to insulin resistance.

The timing is also not ideal but its not always possible to get a 12 or 18 hour fast and I would doubt that this result would be significantly different.

Association of hypertriglyceridemia with insulin resistance in healthy Miniature Schnauzers

Panagiotis G. Xenoulis, DVM, Dr med vet; Melinda D. Levinski, DVM; Jan S. Suchodolski, Dr med vet, PhD; Jörg M. Steiner, Dr med vet, PhD, DACVIM

This paper looked at insulin resistance in non-diabetics and did find an association between that and insulin resistance and certainly I think I see that clinically in this breed.

I don't think we can know for sure but personally I would start treatment as if this dog has idiopathic hypertriglyceridemia because its not going to do the dog any harm and will hopefully help with diabetic control.

So I would be looking at one of the ultra low-fat diets - Hills I/D low fat or RC GI low fat and see what happens.

Just be aware your insulin dose may need to be adjusted when you change the food.
