I've found Kalmaid to work wonders. I know not many people are fans, but every client I've recommended it to has found it to work wonders. 1 pump twice daily for the 1st couple of weeks, then once daily.

I had a case similar to this - had a full work up, scrapes, skin biopsies. Owners wondered possibly about stress so we started on Kalmaid. Worked a treat.

RE: Feline recurrent alpecia cat

If the cat is scratching and nibbling due to stress, consider a trial of amitryptilline? Have you run any bloods to check general health eg underlining liver disease? And have you given any antibiotics? If not a good 3 weeks of cephalexin might not be a bad idea, otherwise echo the thoughts of biopsy, some forms of demodex can be hard to diagnose on scrapes, and don't forget to send a biopsy sample for culture as well as histopathology.

RE: Feline recurrent alpecia cat

Doesnt fit with demodex at all.

I know I'll be accused of turbo posting but I always thought this was a discussion forum so, by definition, there will be two and fro won't there?

Thallium was an off-the-wall referring to the hands picture where it looks like the hair has just fallen out leaving unchanged [?] skin.

As there was no response to a shot of steroids initially I can't see why Depomed would be indicated ie steroids didn't help first time. Also there's little sign of irritation except the apparent saliva discolouration which is [IMHO] a rare finding in itchy cats [others may disagree??]

I still can't reconcile the distribution of the lesions with any allergic skin in a cat I've ever seen??

I doubt its a food allergy but when when you have something weird that might be hyper-allergenic then controlling everything in the environment that may possible sensitise the immune system is never a bad idea.

RE: Feline recurrent alpecia cat

biopsy, dont prep it first, punch lesions, then scrub and clean-do 3 to 4 from different sites including normal. Send a trichogram strip on tape to lab as well if you are not sure about the hairs themselves so include bulbs and tip so can see if tips barbared or not etc.

Use Hills zd if you have it but not really the dietary area of expression for most food allergies in cats

RE: Feline recurrent alpecia cat

Sorry but im kinda lost and only one member made a suggestion (do a biopsy)
I think this is a good suggestion at this stage. If it's a wet/oozy thing you could do an impression smear for cytology. In the pictures is there saliva staining to the fur, or is it just the cat's colour?
I agree that a full thickness skin biopsy would be a good idea, and I'd try and get at least one of them from the edge of the lesion including both normal and abnormal skin.

RE: Feline recurrent alpecia cat

I seem to remember a scald from hot water causing a lesion like the third "raw" skin photo with the hands?

Another one star coming up no doubt, but better if it was refuted I think.
