I have a juvenile patient 5mo who has had a chronic URT infection since December 2015. He has had oral antibiotic treatment comprising baytril, septrin and injectable engemycin with oral metacam with minimal response in his turbid nasal discharge

RE: Pateurellosis- Rabbit

[quote user="Helen Redfern"]With regard to nebulisation is there a particular type you would recommend and are they single use?

We prepare the F10 in a bag of sterile saline as the solution and recommend a human ultrasonic nebuliser (approx £50-80) that can be bought online or via a pharmacy,

Pasteurella was the only microbe cultured and it is a bilateral discharge. I have never used daily injectable penicillin- what dose is recommended- is the dihydrostreptomycin/penicillin? With regard to nebulisation is there a particular type you would recommend and are they single use?

Many thanks

Although often found this isn't always the primary cause so concurrent infections, hygiene and ventilation issues and local pathology (dental, sinusitis, FB) should also still be considered.

It is very young to have consistent problems- do you know if others from the litter are having problems? What breed is it? Is discharge unilateral or bilateral? I would be tempted to get further diagnostics done now as conservative management and appropriate antibiotics haven't solved it. Xrays looking for osteomelitis or dental related pockets of infection would be useful plus endoscopy (though if a small breed having a scope tiny enough to fit up the nostrils may be a sticking point). CT instead of these would be lovely but relies on funds and equipment being available.

If nothing additional is found or the owner is not keen to pursue investigation then nebulisation is a useful adjunct to medical therapy for chronic rhinitis - we generally use 1:250 dilution of F10 disinfectant in saline and nebulise twice daily for 15mins. Plus increasing ventilation and reducing dust (steaming hay before feeding and using dust extracted bedding, or just moving to outdoor keeping if possible).

We have had the odd one that we thought was allergic , "asthmatic" , did well with bisolvon and pred at 1mg/kg. The other thing worth considering is the antibiotic dose rates , many rabbits seem to respond to baytril at 20-25mg/kg, the 5mg/kg seems to just select for resistant populations.

RE: Pateurellosis- Rabbit

I am in no way a rabbit experts, so please shoot me down in flames if you want, but I find these respond well to 2 or 3 jabs of long acting amoxicillin, and injectable doesn't seem to cause gut issues in rabbits. Of course check teeth too....

RE: Pateurellosis- Rabbit

I would try daily injection of penicillin.
