I've just come back from skiing and despite being held up by border control going into Germany from Austria and coming back to the UK at the tunnel no one though it was odd one man in a car would need a roof-box which was the perfect shape for a couple of illegal immigrants to lie down in comfort and stowaway in!!

How many owners can a pet have? By now surely a minority of couples have the same name?

Anyways, we have never had any officials looking at owner's name/address on any side of the sea. On the UK side nobody has ever looked at chip or dog despite the car being marked all over as carrying a pet. The only thing they stop me for coming from Holland are drugs and pornography (me an old lady in a 30 year old smart car!).

But as of course as immigration officials are incapable of stopping illegal imports on invalid passports, porcine aviation is more likely.

I think someone has their wires seriously crossed here. Or its another stupid rule that just inconveniences responsible owners and does nothing to stop the baddies like compulsory microchipping.

The last time I took the dogs through Calais they were only interested in the chip and the passport details and the travel tickets No one looked ay my or my wife passport at the pre- entrance doggy customs bit.

This has cropped up before and although the owner should be named in the passport if they are not travelling with the animal they can authorise someone else to do so.

The quote below is taken from the FAQ's on the Defra / APHA website (Q22)

The owner named in the passport should be travelling with the pet. Alternatively an authorised person can accompany the pets. They should have a document from the owner named in the passport authorising them to accompany up to five owned pets

Insane. The page says owner, not handler. I'm not in the UK, our officials made it clear that this page has to be filled in according to the pet owner and has to be signed by the owner himself. Who travels with the dog is irrelevant. Maybe one of you could ask Defra for a written statement on this?
