I am a final year veterinary student researching the effects of furosemide treatment and polyuria in dogs with congestive heart failure. I would be most grateful if you would take a moment to fill out my short questionnaire, please

RE: Attention all vets - furosemide in dogs
Who else put polydypsia as another 'side effect' which it is if polyuria is the desired mode of action?
Be better if the H and the O could be attached to flatulence, for instance, or passed in expired air?

RE: Attention all vets - furosemide in dogs
A better term might be adverse effect. A drug effect would be either a desired effect or an unwanted effect, and if it's unwanted, it's adverse.

Diuretics' principal effect is to make animals pee more, but that doesn't make it a desired effect.

Side effect is too vague.
Polyuria is not really an adverse effect either, it is what we would expect a diuretic to do. Maybe just "an effect, or normal effect" Could well be undesirable to the client, but it is doing exactly what we want it to do, in getting rid of excess fluid.

Not sure I agree with this.

The desired effect of frusemide when used to treat CHF is to reduce pulmonary oedema.

Polyuria certainly is a side effect of this drug, but most certainly NOT a desired effect (even if is to be expected as a result of the drug's mechanism of action that is used to achieve the desired effect). Just ask any owner.
