I saw this 5 year old FN cat last week. She has a history of flu symptoms and was treated for conjunctivitis last August with chloramphenicol. The owner says her eye has never been normal since this

RE: Eosinophilic keratitis?

Anthony has it spot on.

RE: Eosinophilic keratitis?

Hi Anthony,

Many thanks for your reply-that's really useful. I suspected it was to do with the dye sticking to the granulation tissue rather than ulceration so I shall go ahead with the pred forte drops.

RE: Eosinophilic keratitis?

Hi Lauren,

I've had a similar case recently, one in a cat, one in a dog. They do seem to stain with fluoroscein, but I don' t think it's because of an ulcer, I think it's because of the dye just sticking to the granulation tissue.

Can you do in house cytology? Use some local in the eye, get a sterile cotton but (cytology brush is even better, but I didn't have one) and give the lesion a good rub before rolling the bud on to a slide. I did one last week - pretty low cellularity with diff-quik stain but I did see the odd eosinophil.

With it being a charity clinic, I've found pre-forte drops to be good for treatment; much better than maxitrol (think it's something to do with the depth of penetration - there is a paper on it somewhere) and obviously a lot cheaper than optimmune!
