The dose is 10mg/kg tid for 3 weeks for both conditions, during which time the sialocele should be shrivelled up to a hard knob, and the tear stained faces should be vastly improved. Repeat courses for tear staining are mentioned. Personally, mine have cleared up after 3 weeks and not come back but the owners were also keeping the faces cleaner.

RE: tear staining

I had never heard of using oxy/doxy for epiphora. But I've not heard about the oxytet effect before. It was often recommended for acne in teenagers not so much for the antibiotic effect but its immunomodulatory effect. Not sure it is a responsible use of antibiotics though.

RE: tear staining

Saw a Lintbells rep a few years ago who was pushing Silver Water for cleaning tear/saliva staining. http://www.lintbells.com/products/silvercare-range/silvercare-silver-water Not used it directly myself, so not sure if it works!

RE: tear staining

Not new I don't think, but I recently read something on VIN about using oxytet, due to its ability to break down hydrostatic bonds, it allows tears to flow down the lacrimal duct and reduces tear stains. I found this as a tangent after looking up using oxytet to 'seal' sialoceles. I found this fascinating. Apparently a chronic sialocele will persist due to saliva keeping a tiny hole open with a 'rope' of saliva, and the oxytet causes the 'rope' to break down. Rather than surgery, they were suggesting treat for about 3 weeks with oxytet and watch the sialocele disappear.

Sorry if this is old news, it was the first time I'd heard about it! I sort of knew about oxytet and white poodle faces but I assumed it was the antibiotic effect and had never used it myself. Since reading about if I've tried in a couple of dogs and its has worked well, at least in the short term.
