I don't know what the fuss is about Ronaxan anyway, I've never had any issues with it and I use it a lot as we see loads of cats with chlamydia. Besides there is something about bioavailability and calcium absorption so doxycycline is best given with food regardless.

RE: Doxycycline in cats - where do I get suitable tablets?

Would crushing Ronaxan increase the likelihood of stricture?

Regardless of whether or not Engemycin stings, there would be problems getting the average small animal owner to agree - it's bad enough persuading them to inject insulin - when there really isn't an alternative. Unlike farmers, they're not used to giving injections, so haven't the same blase attitude

If they want to travel somewhere that doesn't accept on then that is a different issue and you're not signing a health/fitness to travel certificate are you?[/quote]

You'd be a brave OV if you gave a passport in my opinion, new regulations from 2014. I can see it now, Bengal owner refused access back to UK without the right authorisation demanding compensation/hotel bills....I'm only pointing it out as an ex government vet where there are no shades of grey.

https://www.gov.uk/...data/.../pet-travel-scheme-dec-2014-guidance.pdf

6. Clearer definition of cat, dog and ferret
The new EU Regulation specifically states that the only species of pet animal that can travel
under the EU pet travel rules are:
• Canis lupis familiaris – domestic dog
• Felis silvestris catus – domestic cat
• Mustela putorius furo – ferret
The reason for this change is to make sure that wild animals can’t be moved under rules
designed for pet travel.

This change will not affect the majority of pet owners. However, if your pet is a hybrid (such as a
Bengal or Savannah cat, or a Wolfdog) then you must seek advice from the Animal Health and
Veterinary Laboratories Agency before you travel. They will advise you on the import
requirements for your pet.
No, more like tired brain after blocked cats, tail amputation and other things today and I've just found the formulary!!

I do like the SID advise, as giving a Bengal tablets twice a day is..........

It's licenced and 20mg should not greatly overdose. But I'm intrigued as to how small an 8 month Bengal must be to require 15mg at standard dose of 10mg/kg. And why bid dosing - it is a single daily dose? Give it for 4 weeks and all will be sorted.

As for oesophageal strictures I've never seen one and I've given shed loads of Ronaxan tablets. Either mix with food or pill before feeding.

I can't see why you can't issue a passport either. If they want to travel somewhere that doesn't accept on then that is a different issue and you're not signing a health/fitness to travel certificate are you?

RE: Doxycycline in cats - where do I get suitable tablets?

If you've a tame large animal practice nearby they *may* have some open Karidox (100mg/ml) oral solution. Bit overkill to order a full bottle as it only comes in a litre size!

Having seen many many cats with Chlamydia (>300 and counting), I've never seen oesophageal stricture. Some vomiting yes, never stricture.

As others have said ronaxan may be available.

I always dose once daily, much easier on cat and owner as you'll need to give at least 21 days. Personally in your case I would be more than happy giving 50mg SID.

If not possible, amoxiclav will also work but need to give for 5-6 weeks so wither oral solution or tabs of this.

RE: Doxycycline in cats - where do I get suitable tablets?

Ronaxan not available then?
