I made a not very tongue in cheek comment in my first post in this thread about the link between killing animals and psychopathic behaviour. All studies of psychopathic murderers has shown that they started by hurting/killing animals for pleasure. The worry is therefore that those who actually do find killing animals entertaining are likely to have other psychopathic tendencies.

My advice therefore would be to not invite Hannibal Michael around for dinner if you have a nice bottle of Chianti!

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?
I shoot and bleed a number of cows to go into the food chain every year, and spend most of the rest of my time keeping them alive and healthy.
Absolutely, and I don't have an issue with that. I suppose I'm seeing a distinction between killing animals for a reason (welfare, control of pests, meat etc) and killing simply for entertainment.
You've got a point!

I don't know what I believe really. I'm not against all hunting- done well it is very humane and is often justifiable; such as being done for the benefit of the individual, the species or the ecosystem. It will often prevent suffering. But I just couldn't imagine spending my day treating rabbits and then spending my evening killing them. In the same way I couldn't shoot dogs, cats, cows or sheep simply for my own entertainment.

No simple conclusions can be drawn.... it is too complicated a situation.

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?

I don't have an answer to this question but I do think that killing a rabbit for pleasure is often kinder than keeping a rabbit for pleasure !

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?

I often come home to a brace of pheasant hooked over the hanging baskets outside the porch, I am sure its great for some people ,but I like my dead tissue in a packet with the rest of the Ocado order. Its just so much effort prepping it , and cleaning it. One of the other vets loves them so i hand them over, shame to waste them. The local shoot seem to have lots of fun on the relevant Sunday mornings, locals often go beating for them. Sometimes the aim is not to great after a few hot toddies. There is always one buck shot labrador or springer each year. That is the point, its a social event , a sporting thing, a bit like golf ,Clay pigeons etc . The pheasants are corn fed and some are so fat they struggle off the ground. If it wasn't for the shoot they would not be there, the foxes would probably go back to stealing newborn lambs and chickens. So overall the effect of this hunting is probably neutral or slightly positive.

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?
Try a Venison Wellington sometime - far better!
Careful now. If you want a halo-polishing competition you'd better make sure that yours is pretty jolly shiny.
I drink milk, and try to make sure it's high welfare
Do you mean the stuff from cows that are part suckled until the calves are weaned?

I grew up on a dairy, beef and sheep farm; still have sheep; quite often go to the mart to sell hoggets, cull ewes and finished lambs; have been to the local abattoir to see the kill line during EMS in college; have gone along with my husband when he goes rough shooting and fishing (and eaten the results) .

I think the most intense and prolonged suffering during any of these manmade ventures is probably firstly the distress of dairy cows and calves when the calves are taken off the mothers at 1 or 2 days old (the bawling lasts all day and half the night); and secondly the fish I have seen caught by a friend my husband used to fish with. The friend doesn't despatch them on landing as most fisherman do. The mackerel would still be gasping and flapping ten or even 15 minutes later. Having been scuba diving and felt the effect on the ears of coming up a little too quickly from 30 feet , I also wonder what a fish's swim bladder feels like when it's trawled up fairly quickly from hundreds of feet.

So if you want to take another step up the moral ladder, perhaps you'd be better off ditching fish and dairy products and taking up the consumption of suckler-reared beef and lamb. You wouldn't be at the shining pinnacle of a proper vegan but it would be a step in the right direction. For extra bonus points get a rifle (or big stick), landowners' permission and take day trips to areas where myxomatosis is present- the duration and intensity of the suffering of the myxie rabbits we used to see as children trumps anything else I've seen on the farm.

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?

As long as Bob doesn't poison his body with nicotine either, it should be OK.
(description of fantastic food bonanza)
I'm actually impressed you manage breakfast on Boxing day after all that! I think I'd avoid even looking at food for about a week after that lot! (do you like cheeeeeeeeeeeese?)

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?
So, let me get this straight. When animals need shooting, it's OK as long as you hate yourself while you do it?
Not really. Just not enjoy it?

RE: Killing animals for fun - is it ever right?
Can't actually remember the last time I had a meal in someone else's house - can think of few things worse (dead unsociable me).
Hmmm. Well, here at Wray Towers we will be gathering friends and family for the festive seasonin in a celebration of our togetherness. Food will be a signsificant part and it looks sonething like the following

Xmas Eve - Starters of spiced mackerel with a beetroot and harissa salsa or duck liver parfait topped with a blood orange liquer jelly, taken with an English white. Then, beef Wellington ( we are just down the road from Stratfield Saye), spinach with garlic, sweet potato puree and red cabbage washed down by a Californian Red. Then cheeeeeezes and puds, crema Catalana or Turkish delight and pomegranate Pavlova washed down with a German sticky.

Xmas breakfast - Suffolk Xmas cure smopked bacon, eggs and Old English sausages, sourdough toast, orange and ginger marmalade and manly coffee or mincey weird tea.

Xmas lunch, if there are any takers will be veggie, with leek and potato soup ( veggie stock) cheeeeezes and possibly a lighht red, perhaps a Fleurie.

Xmas dinner - smoked salmon or eel or the parfait with Champers or a white Vacqueyras, then Crown roast turkey with the legs confit, roast potatos in beef dripping this year, parsnip croquettes, red cabbage and cranberry relish stuffed apples and gravy (already made from roasted chicken wings and herbs and stuff) "accompanied" by a Gigondas. Then, cheeeeezes if you must and Xmas pudding or Blackberry and sloe gin jelly. The sticky has not been decided on yet.

Boxing Day breakfast - my favourite, because it's usually quiet, a slice of ham on sourdough toast with a fried egg and strong coffee.

Boxing Day other meal, leftovers of whatever, with the ham followed by trifle and/or sorbet and whatever anyone wants to drink.

The joy of having of family and friends is amplified by the food with all its sensory variation, perhaps something vegetarian misanthropes miss out on.
