Any advice re anaesthesia and surgery? I was planning to use triple plus intubate if I can, midline. She's pretty placid but was very overweight so she is on a diet.

RE: Skunk spay

RE: Skunk spay

Well done

Lidocaine on the glottis then standard intubation, usually with a 2.5-3mm tube and they are much like cats in this respect. Reverse trendelenberg posture helps with ventilation under anaesthesia when they are obese.

If you are used to ferret spays then it should be simple, if anything they are easier as the ovarian bursa is less fatty and everything is a bit bigger.

They tend to be uncomplicated with post-op management as long as intradermals and post-op analgesia are used and there are no known cases of adrenal pathology post neuter.

Have done a few of these as well as GAs for other procedures. I've done a couple with an opiod premed plus intravenous propofol/alfaxan however the cephalic vein can be awkward in fat wriggly animals and I much prefer intramuscular medetomidine and ketamine. Ferret doses work well - I use 5mg/kg ketamine and 0.08mg/kg medetomidine. I tend to skip the butorphanol and use buprenorphine instead. Intubation and midline OVH is straight forward - just ensure you use intradermal sutures. I give metacam and fluids at time of the op and dispense metacam to go home. Try and feed as soon as possible once skunk is awake.

RE: Skunk spay

Gassing down a skunk could cause some "aromatic unpleasantness"
