These are real cases
Dog brought in and recognised by the nursing staff as a dog reported stolen, what do you do?
I'm not playing a game here, as I will say what I did

RE: Microchip ownership issues - number 1

There's this flow chart thing on the RCVS site - never know might come in useful

We had a similar situation where 'new' owners brought a dog in that they had 'rescued' from someone living rough on the streets of Southampton.

It was recorded as stolen so we informed the microchip register and a degree of communication took place that did not affect us directly. The dog was returned to the owner.

I will try to facilitate the process of getting the dog to its rightful home, but I don't feel I have too much responsibility. Thankfully never become piggy in the middle between two warring groups. Bet that is no fun.

RE: Microchip ownership issues - number 1

What happened in this case was that the owner allowed the dog to be scanned. It turned out that yes the police had been called and sorted it out, and indeed ownership had been transferred. In this case no one had told the register to remove the 'Stolen' flag or had transferred ownership, would have been helpful.

I'm sorry to labour this but what rights have we to insist to do this? If an owner says NO, and bear in mind if it is stolen will they oblige?

Then can we simply say 'I have the right to scan this animal' Calling the police is an interesting one, that would create a few interesting facebook posts if you were wrong?

In effect do we have the legal powers to scan everything that is presented?

Report it to the microchip company then the Police.

It is stolen property!

Avoid contacting the RCVS because they will procrastinate, huff and puff and log the enquiry. No inquiry and any fallout is after the event. You can plead innocence!

It could be that the new people don't know the dog is stolen so keep them informed.

RE: Microchip ownership issues - number 1

Contact the police - otherwise you are an accessory after the fact to a very serious crime.

Reasonable people will behave reasonably most of the time.

If however its a "pikey" situation just write everything down and phone the police and the rightful owners, you either let them go on their way with the stolen animal or contemplate the outcome of a waiting room brawl. An entertaining diversion for the assembled other clients but not financially productive and ultimately quite stressful. The police are generally pretty useless in these situations as they do not want to mess with them either.
