A Bichon which was diagnosed with Addison's a couple of years ago. It is nice and stable with florinef alone and just has a bit of prednisolone for stressful times such as the groomers. It's last electrolytes a couple

RE: Addison's and Diabetes

My cousin's cocker developed Addisons before he was 2 years old, and a couple of years after that developed hypothyroidism, one of the only two dogs I have ever seen that you could diagnose hypot4 from the car park.

I never told her he might go on to develop diabetes too....but he hasn't so far!

There is a defined immune mediated multiple endocrinopathy described, where almost everything gets taken out.

Regarding fructosamine, I do like it as a form of benchmarking, but I find it much less useful in dogs than cats.

By the way - is anyone else noticing an epidemic of new diabetics? I've not had any for ages, suddenly three come along in a few days! Worse still, one is a Westie and the other is a Scottie and they are blowing my mental filing system to pieces, especially as the clients look rather similar ....

RE: Addison's and Diabetes

yes once ,it was a malamute 3yo entire female

originally presented as a diabetic on 38iu can insulin bid 2nd opinion worried about cataract development . At that stage there weren't any . It was swinging and hypo-ing. Slowly weaned it off and Spayed it .It was then fine for 4 months without any treatment .Then re-appeared with intumescent cataracts. It was fine post phaco. 1 year later presented with weight loss chronic diahorrea flat line ACTH stim , NA/K ratio 19. Stable on 6 Fflorineff bid. Fine for 18 months then became pupd again blood glucose >30 ++++ urine . Stable on 18 IU can insulin bid and doing well ???? Poly endocrinopathy ? Was the first episode post oestrus or acromegaly ?? IOLs fine still visual but now developing corneal lipidosis.

Your guess as good as mine but i suspect pet plan are probably considering a hitman.

RE: Addison's and Diabetes
Maybe in a cat but not in a dog. With a BG that high and glycosuria and compatible clinical signs ie pupd, pp, wt loss then it's diabetic. Fructosamine not necessary. You can get multiple endocrinopathies as part of a pansystemic autoimmune disease. So you get immune destruction of the adrenal cortices, islets in the pancreas and can also get hypothyroidism too.

RE: Addison's and Diabetes
Florinef has moderate glucocorticoid activity so it could conceivable be iatrogenic.
Indeed, I would be testing fructosamine before I rushed into giving insulin from one high glucose reading.

RE: Addison's and Diabetes

Not seen it myself but Florinef has moderate glucocorticoid activity so it could conceivable be iatrogenic.
