I've been seeing a 10 wk old male beagle with quite marked PUPD this week. He's drinking 750ml water a day on top of soaked food, and is 3.2kg bodyweight. He is slightly skinny and has a

RE: Hyposthenuria in a 10 wk old beagle

Puppies of that age have immature kidneys and pee everywhere anyway...so I would also advise waiting. You can drive yourself crazy trying to investigate PU/PD issues even in adults - how many of them test normal in everything except the urine SG?

Most likely this pup will normalise in the next few weeks regardless of whatever you do - hopefully anyway!

RE: Hyposthenuria in a 10 wk old beagle
Thanks Andrew, very helpful. Would a DDAVP trial be the next thing to do if it doesn't improve in a few weeks?
As Martin says, the problem with DDAVP trials is that you can get some response even in animals that do not have DI so its not a perfect test - if the owners want a definitive diagnosis then you would need a water deprivation but I would want the dog to be significantly older first.

The problem is we're looking for an alternative to a 24 hr water deprivation trial which is tricky in a normal practice and not without risk. Like Andrew if this pup is well in every other way I would leave it a few weeks and see what happens.

RE: Hyposthenuria in a 10 wk old beagle

Thanks Andrew, very helpful.
assuming you are happy that the BAST has been performed correctly and run at a reputable lab then it excludes a shunt - despite the other findings that could be supportive.

USG can be difficult to interpret in a dog of this age because it can take 3-4 months for maturation of the kidneys and development of normal USG - having said that this is excessively dilute.

If the urine culture is negative (and I would ideally look at sediment +/- a gram stain as well) I would probably try to give it a few weeks to see if anything changes before exploring the more unusual options.
