He responds well to treatment (prokinetcis, analgesia, fluids etc). But I just wondered what possilbe underlying causes could be present? He has

RE: frequent bouts of gastric stasis in a rabbit

Thanks for the replies. This rabbit is owned by a local rabbit charity. Lives indoors, they are kept in bonded pairs and they do look after them well. It probably is linked to its lack of incisors I guess, seems the most likely problem. They are usually keen on work ups, so might be worth repeating rads.

RE: frequent bouts of gastric stasis in a rabbit
Do you actually read the posts Martin?
Clearly not.
I said "there haven't been any problems with the cheek teeth"

And of this what does he actually eat?

What is the management like? Any other pets, small children or exposure to wildlife either directly or through a window?

I would consider dental disease, lack of fibre or repeated stressors as high on the list for this rabbit and would be tempted to do skull radiographs to see if there is evidence of osteomyelitis or apical pathology whilst reviewing the husbandry.

These can be frustrating cases as it is difficult to know where to start if all obvious causes are excluded and then a broad approach needs to be taken, looking for any focus of pain or disease, usually starting with bloods and survey rads of skull and body.

If not getting enough fibre, I would introduce it slowly, as the rabbit is more likely to accept gradual change than suddenly being presented with nothing but pellets

RE: frequent bouts of gastric stasis in a rabbit

My immediate thought given his dental history is that he's just not getting enough fibre in his diet if he's unable to prehend or chew hay properly - whats the state of his cheek teeth?
