I just wondered if anyone had any tips that might help my patient..
She's a 10yo Springer, generally healthy, who for a few years has had problems with her nose getting dry and crusty and splits in the nasal planum at the top of the nostrils

RE: Dry split nose in old dog - any thoughts?

I see this problem a lot in older spaniels (cocker and springer) and also in labradors. is there any specific diagnosis and treatment (assuming you've ruled out dry eye)? Sometimes there can be a nasal discharge present as well - is it a form of chronic rhinitis and would steroids be of any benefit?

RE: Dry split nose in old dog - any thoughts?

Check for.dry eye

RE: Dry split nose in old dog - any thoughts?

Interestingly an email reply from Lintbells (I had emailed them initially then phoned before had heard back) suggested that the products WOULD help with the condition, suggesting ideally using yumega plus and yumega extra together.

I suppose for them it is worse to sell a product that they're sure it will not work for the problem than not sell the product at all. I suppose there's a lot of competition in the market so taking care of your public image is important.

RE: Dry split nose in old dog - any thoughts?

If you can get hold of lanolin that can work very well as a moisturiser, and doesn't lick off easily either. will probably need to be applied several times a day - in times past I had a client with a GSD with this problem and we used plain orabase (Which is mostly lanolin) and over time the keratoses softened and crumbled away, with very good results. Sadly orabase seems unavailable for several years now, but lanolin should do the job.

I don't think using any of the essential oil type supplements would do any harm either - I'd go for Yumega Plus out of familiarity and general appreciation for Lintbells products.

RE: Dry split nose in old dog - any thoughts?

Thanks. They did recommend their skin cream which sounds like a bit of a moisturiser so perhaps that'd a good place to start. I was surprised they didn't embrace selling more EFA supplements; as far as I know the only contraindication would be in pancreatitis..

RE: Dry split nose in old dog - any thoughts?

How about moisturiser rather than vaseline? Vaseline just seems to sit on top of the skin whereas a moisturiser would hopefully be absorbed into the tissues reducing the cracking? When I have dry lips in the winter vaseline is rubbish, liberal application of moisturising lip balm helps a lot. I'd probably recommend EFA supplements too, as they won't do any harm. I'm suprised the Lintbells people don't just recommend their product for any problem people call in for. Are there any contraindications for EFAs?
