It was initially picked up at his annual booster, and when I first palpated it I thought it was an adenoma/adenocarcinoma, especially given as he was entire. Liver values off the scale on bloods, abdo scan revealed a heterogenous, irregular spleen and a liver mass. He went downhill despite supportive treatment and was PTS on Sunday.

I feel horrendous that I didn't pick up on this sooner - once cytology came back as a MCT I should have started the work up; bloods and abdo scan, rather than just thinking about surgical removal. Perhaps this might have been detected sooner and I wouldn't have given the owners any false hope.

RE: Peri-anal Mast Cell Tumour

Panic over - I saw the dog this evening for a pre-op check, and the mass has disappeared, with a draining tract now present!

Now this is either a miracle cure, or it was an anal gland abscess all along and the FNA was misinterpreted. Although it requires another GA, I find owners are usually keen once they understand the implications of treating MCT, and if it is high grade, it avoids the dog undergoing a procedure which will not be curative. Good luck.

RE: Peri-anal Mast Cell Tumour

Hi,

I treated a dog with MCT a few yers ago, it was on the carpus, the dog was 13 and chemotherapy or amputation wasn't an option. I tried Masivet and was very happy with progress, the tumour shrank within 10days , the leg was almost normal, of course its not going to last long-term. They say 4-6 months, but we were not planning to debulk it. It gave us 13 months of normal life . I guess in your case I would give Masivet a go and then try to cut as much out as you can, but considering the location it s likely to be high grade MCT.
