I would like your opinion about this case that was handed over to me tonight. 8.5 y.o male basset hound with geriatric abnormality of rib cage. On the 15th August he was seen, because of
"significant weight loss (5kg), PU/PD, MM a bit pale

RE: Basset hound with weight loss.
What was the nature of the effusion?
Yes, me too, seems a pity to do an invasive test and not glean anything from it.

SG, cytology gives a load of info.

It may even give you a positive diagnosis.....

RE: Basset hound with weight loss.
So far, I've not seen any case of a dog with pericardial effusion that survived for long.
Generally I would agree but we recently had a PE that presented as a liver /GIT problem ,it was also ascitic( we were considering some weird PNS) . After draining and treatment that dog resolved and has been fine for 3 years ,so sometimes its just idiopathic, or part of a generalised vasculitis which could explain the GIT problems and swollen mediastinum. That got better with pred and vivitonin after some research on VIN. Hope that helps .

RE: Basset hound with weight loss.

Hi, Bill. Sorry, that's one of the cons of being an OOH vet, that most cases are not followed when they go back to their own vets after the weekend. So far, I've not seen any case of a dog with pericardial effusion that survived for long. As someone pointed out, a cardiac tumour would be on top of the differentials, but I cannot tell you for sure if he went to heaven.

RE: Basset hound with weight loss.

Hi Silvia,

A pericardial effusion means a heart base tumour has to be high on the differential list, and it's possible that there's something else, eg bacterial overgrowth (response to antibiotics) maybe associated with maybe food allergy/pancreatic insufficiency as well. More questions than answers I'm afraid.
Yes! This changes things somewhat. Was there a significant pericardial effusion and was this clearly seen on ultrasound? What was the nature of the effusion? Haemorrhagic, clear? It is somewhat confusing as no other signs relating to tamponade, ie no right sided heart failure, ascites etc.

The clinical signs seem to be primarily gasto intestinal. If you hadn't added that bit about the pericardial effusion then I would have been going for a ex lap. I agree the stomach does look abnormal. This dog also has a strange looking rib cage which doesn't help!

RE: Basset hound with weight loss.
radiographs were performed before removing pericardial fluids with ultrasound help
Would you say that the pericardial effusion can explain the lungs abnormal position? or is it too displaced? He was sent home with frusemide.
