I have been handed over a clinical case concerning a 10.5 year old DSH. The cat had been into the clinic on two occasions within the last two months for treatment of constipation. Radiographs were taken. Besides confirming constipation, my colleague

RE: Cisapride use in cats?

I've only tried cisapride in dysautonomia cases, which unfairly to the drug means it didn't have much effect. But I'd strongly second the use of Movicol, the plain sachets are really easy to get cats to take and really effective. We also start with about 1/8 teaspoon (or a decent pinch) twice daily and titrate up depending on effect.

It has transrormed the lives of several of our feline patients, and their owner too come to that...

No side effects seen here at all.

RE: Cisapride use in cats?

I have used cisapride in cats several times with no side effects.

The drug was pulled in the US because obese folk with multiple health issues including toilet problems had heart attacks and the drug was blamed.

It was needing enemas every few days - not ideal to have to keep giving GA or heavy sedation in such an old cat, and was verging on PTS. It seemed to work - the cat is still going 4-5 months later and hasn't had an enema since.

RE: Cisapride use in cats?

Thank you both for your help

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. How often would you give it to a patient and at the same dosage that's in the BSAVA small animal formulary, it's under bowel cleansing solution: cats prior to lower GI exam 22-33ml/kg po?

[/quote]

Rather not I think. We get sachets (Movicol junior) in Germany and I have the owner taper it to the cats needs. Mostly I'll give a quarter of a tea spoon twice daily, in small cats I start with 1/8 of a tea spoon, some cats will need up to half a teaspoon bid. Do not use the products with added electrolytes in cats with CRI.

RE: Cisapride use in cats?

Oh, ok, very good. He originally went on lactulose but it was increasingly difficult to get him to eat it. He has been on Cisapride 5mg bid [5kg cat] for about a year now and although his hindlegs are getting progressively worse with the LS problem, he has only required one enema since starting. I crush it and mix it with butter.

A vet friend has her small cat on cisapride 2.5mg bid for megacolon, again for over a year.

I recall there was BSAVA Congress session from 2014[?] which I listened to as a podcast which was useful.

RE: Cisapride use in cats?

Hello,
