"Ranitidine according to studies needs to be used at 4mg/kg at least to change stomach pH. At 2mg/kg it is no better than placebo. Omeprazole needs about 7d to reach maximal effect. Best given in evening as proton pumps manufactured during the overnight fast.

Agree re metoclop - next to useless in cats, they have minimal dopamine recpetors. In fact, it's pretty crap in dogs too. Most hospitalised cats given metoclop don't vomit because of environmental stressors, not because they've had metoclop. In some vomting studies doens't perform any better than saline!"

We have got sucralfate here, both tablets and suspension, I can ask where we obtain it from.

Totally agree re gaviscon- I get oesophageal reflux occasionally which is unbelievably painful- gaviscon doesn't touch it, in fact nothing I have tried so far seems to, so any suggestionsgratefully recieved!

RE: stomach ulceration treatment - now antepsin is like hens teeth

I have been getting Sucralfate for horses on an STC via Idis.
....found but one had a tablet called De-noltab used in people for just that , it is a bismuth salt that seals ulcers ( other option Pepto-Bismol but no chance a dog was going to swallow that!)

[/quote]You're barking up the wrong tree here Andrew. Bismuth salts do not 'seal the ulcer' it works in human gastric ulcers because it is active against the Helicobacter and stimulates mucosal prostaglandin and bicarbonate secretion. In short it works against the causes of ulceration not the ulcer itself and doesn't act as barrier over the ulcer in the same way as the action of Sucralfate. You don't have to take my word for it, its in the BSAVA Formulary.

However, if anecdotal evidence suggests it is helpful then I wouldn't knock it. Just that given there is no evidence to link Helicobactor to gastric ulceration in our species it is not a direct substitute for sucralfate, AFAIA one does not exist.

RE: stomach ulceration treatment - now antepsin is like hens teeth

Thanks, useful to know.
