Since getting digital (a CR system as it was needed for general X-rays as well) and dropping the cost of dental X-rays I am performing them about 10 times as often. The extra benefit in finding pathology that wasn't clinically evident, knowing which of two teeth that looked a bit 'iffy' need removing (maybe both), ensuring that all the tooth has come out (and finding broken roots when it has gone a bit wrong) is more than paying for itself.

There are of course those cats with type 2 resorptive lesions for whom crown amputation rather than digging out a root that has been replaced by bone occur, which saves time. I just tell myself that I have avoided unnecessary trauma to the cat even if it has cost a little less.

I currently charge for taking X-rays but I may drop the charge as they take a bit of time, and I'm charging for the time anyway. What I am learning is the importance of showing clients the X-rays so they understand the value of the procedure their pet has had.

If I had DR, where the time taken is markedly reduced I would have to rethink the pricing strategy, but I think the principle would stand.

RE: X-ray pup teeth
Obviously you don't charge per image, that would be a bit silly.

Why ever not, more images = more time; time = money
If you're a minute micro itemiser, all right.

To me, the advent of digital radiography has meant release from worrying about the number of films you've taken.

For instance. Standard survey of cat's dentition, 7 "films". You feel the need to take another of the right mandible with a smaller exposure, just to check something suspicious. You feel the need to take another of the 108 at a slightly different angle, just to check something. In my opinion (of course ) it's a bit silly to charge extra for each of those. Or doing endodontic treatment on a dog's canine tooth. You might, if lucky, get away with the minimum three "films". Probably you'll want more, perhaps three more, perhaps a dozen. You may want extra views "just to be sure". It's not sensible to charge per image.

Just charge a fair flat rate for the session.

RE: X-ray pup teeth

Obviously you don't charge per image, that would be a bit silly.

Both.

The charging just depends on your general approach to pricing and charging. If you like to have standard all-in prices for set procedures, just build say £40 or 50 in for the radiography. If you like to minutely itemise things, have an item like"radiography.... £40".

Obviously you don't charge per image, that would be a bit silly.

RE: X-ray pup teeth

We're looking into a dental X-ray system.
