Hi As product manager for Apometic I have had reports from all around the coast, Irish Sea, North Sea and Channel. Most frequent reports come from the Channel, Dover to Plymouth stretch. In 2014 there was a large amount of Palm Oil washed up on the Isle of Wight. It will very in size (as mentioned earlier), colour (from off white to dark yellow and brown) dependant on the contaminants. It is usually intentionally (illegally) flushed from ships to clean their holds.

As earlier stated palm oil poses low toxicity risk but the contaminants as they are of unknown substances, should always be viewed with suspicion. Veterinary experience from the Isle of Wight was that small amounts were vomited successfully, but large volumes did "reform into a foreign body".

RE: Palm oil toxicity

It's not very good for orangutans, either. :(

RE: Palm oil toxicity

That's utterly disgraceful!

News reports date back to October 2013 - it's been about for a while. Varies in size from giant boulders of the stuff to tiny little pebbles. I haven't seen a case personally, but I know there have been issues locally with dogs eating it.

If it's a small amount usually they just have vomiting and diarrhoea, however the local vets are so aware of it now if a dog comes in unwell with a recent history of walking on certain beaches they're admitted for IVFT and symptomatic treatment.

RE: Palm oil toxicity

I didn't know it either.

It is something that occurs quite frequently along beaches and there definitely are issues with it. Very palatable to dogs from my experience.
