I know this topic has been discussed at length, but I haven't used the transdermal gel before, but it has fallen on me to sort out dose and frequency for a client.
The cat is currently on 10mg Vidalta, but due to poor compliance has barely

Re: transdermal methimazole

You could offer to shave their pussy?
I have one cat very successfully controlled on it for well over a year now.

We advised the client to wear gloves when handling the gel and applying to the cat. Also, other then removing obvious gross contamination, I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning the ears. I think using one ear or the other or alternating wouldn't make much difference. I did ask Summit once about switching the site of application as the cat was starting to become funny about having it's ears handled and they basically said "it's up to you"!

Re: transdermal methimazole
If applying twice daily, should you use alternate ears? Should you clean the previous ear when applying the next dose?
My case needed so much they had to use both ears anyway and I've yet to see a cat with such dirty pinnas I've felt the need to clean them. Or maybe because I didn't tell the client to clean the ears was why it didn't seem to work!!

Re: transdermal methimazole

Thanks for that! I am finding different papers report different things.

With administration, obviously there is the health and safety considerations- such as wearing gloves when applying.

If applying twice daily, should you use alternate ears? Clean the ear before applying? Should you clean the previous ear when applying the next dose?

Re: transdermal methimazole

It is methimazole so requires twice daily dosing at the dose you would give Felimazole not Vidalta. Because of varying pharmcodynamics you will still have to monitor until stable but never underestimate the ability of clients to find ways of failing to comply!

It didn't work in the one and only cat I tried it on. Once again I suspect lack of compliance because the owner claimed she needed to apply so much gel there wasn't enough bare skin to apply it to. That ened up with radio-iodine therapy.

There is however evidence that a large part of the absorption is not transdermal but oral as the cat grooms itself afterwards!

Re: transdermal methimazole

Hello Tracy.

I hope the weather with you is better with you, than it is here!

This thread here implies that you go in at the same dose and frequency as Felimazole - so seems to imply twice daily dosing.

There is a paper linked by Francisco that may help.
