Over what time period do you administer the dose intravenously. Reading around the subject the longer the time period for administration the less cardiotoxicity

Re: Doxorubicin administration

A dog I sent to an oncologist for chemo after the removal of a high grade sarcoma didn't use doxorubicin because the dog had a heart murmur.

Re: Doxorubicin administration

As long as it takes a 100ml saline drip to run though at one drop a second so about 15-20 minutes. I still have someone on suicide watch though.

Nontheless, I had one CKCS with lymphoma drop of the needle presumably from cardiac arrest due to pre-existing cardiac disease. Its brother which by sad coincidence was diagnosed at the same time was OK but the owner decided to abort the course as a precaution. It did make me wonder if we should scan all animals for cardiac disease, especially those breeds at risk, before giving dox. This dog was asymptomatic and had no murmur.

Re: Doxorubicin administration

Doxorubicin is very toxic to tissues. If given over 6 hours you either need someone sitting with it for the whole time or you risk it going extra vascular and causing a massive slough.

Re: Doxorubicin administration

Thanks :)

Do you know why this particular time was chosen as I know some studies tried it over 10minutes and found fairly high toxicity and other studies found less toxicity over 6hours plus?? I.e why don't we therefore give it over 6hours?!
