If one can justify and put forward an argument for its use over and above using licenced induction agents such as Propofol or Alphaxalone , and as no licenced veterinary formulation is no longer available, it is legitimate to use a generic thiopentone under the rules of the cascade.

Thanks again but I obtained a box of 25 vials from Dunlops 3 months ago - last month requested more but was told it is no longer available.

Referred by Boots to Archimedes Pharma - no response to enquiries.

Dunlop's have 25 x 500mg vials of Thiopental on their online order system.

some of the practices I work in still have it stock, other than that you could obtain the human form "Thiopental" with a prescription from a pharmacy

Thought I was only v.s. on the planet still preferring Thio - have gone squinty searching web for supplier.

You "still use it in some cases", present tense so make my day and tell me the supplier.

wow, another vet out there who likes to use thiopentone!. I still like to use it for some cases, I think used with care in lower doses with a good premed it is still a good induction agent. I think the slower recover and slower rise in BP is sometimes an advantage.

I think propofol is sometimes over rated and is not the "Gold Standard" as claimed in the commercial advertising. I use it much of the time, but it is not always my drug of choice.

As a veterinary form is no longer available, it is quite legitimate to use the generic human preparation, Thiopental. Injection, powder for reconstitution, thiopental sodium, net price 500-mg vial = £3.06 makes a 20ml vial of 2.5% solution

Thiopental is still used in some places as a truth serum. The barbiturate drugs as a class decrease higher cortical brain functioning. Psychiatrists hypothesize that lying is more complex than the truth, suppression of the higher cortical functions may lead to the uncovering of the "truth" since the "truth" would theoretically be less complex."

I have two bottles, one four years OOD, one a mere two years. However, Dunlops can supply packs of 25 x 500mg vials of thiopental according to their product list, and I imagine that they are within date! I suppose that would be better than our OOD stuff?

Simple plan. Very fond of Thio for short term ops. If expired supply available check with manufacturer re. safety/efficacy. Meanwhile continue with alternatives.

We might still have a couple of bottles lying on a shelf ... they are only about three years out of date, so probably still fully effective. :)

It hasn't been available for about 18 months. We moved over to propofol when supplies ran out in 2007
