I log just the reading done ad hoc to study a particular argument. In that case I put down the argument I was researching, the date, the source(s) of information and briefly note down what I learned. When I read the journals I just put them towards the 10 hours, unless there is a specific article related to something I was studing and that add something new, in that case I add a few notes and the title of the article to the sources. I don't know if it makes sense...

Re: online cpd

[quote user="Tom Ward"]How are people recording their reading? I've stated my fondness for overseas conferences. They're not tax free holidays as some cynics may suggest but create a relaxed atmosphere conducive to learning. I'll also do UK conferences, webinars, locally and specialist centre provided seminars, product launches, lunch and learns, reading journals, chatting to reps, even learning from this forum. Which raises a case in point - the very presence of most people on this forum probably means they are interested in learning and don't need a whip to do it. There are of course plenty who do little or no CPD and in many ways it is their loss as they are not able to gain the greatest sense of satisfaction from their profession but equally there will be many who clock their 36 hours just to say they've done them and do little to change the way they work.

The RCVS can monitor CPD as much as they want and even examine us but it matters not one jot unless there is some sort of audit of clinical outcome to show it has been put into good practice. So how do we go about that is the next question?

Re: online cpd

I'm a better learner when I can read and take notes (or see and take notes), so textbooks, articles, webinars and in general any medium wich allows me to stop and review is good for me. For other more social people it may well be to spend some time at the congress bar discussing cases with friends, ultimately it all depends on individual preferences and RCVS must decide if they are willing to trust us or not, if not I'm not sure what the way out might be, maybe only accept assessed courses by regulated providers? But it will be only a waste of time for many of us.

Re: online cpd

I don't think RCVS give two hoots if you spent 45 minutes in a lecture and 45 minutes in the bar and cheekily claimed 1.5 hours CPD.
Absolutely right!

Currently all CPD is based on trust - unless every item is validated by an exam who is to know that you haven't slept through a lecture or spent a congress in the bar with your pals.

I'd be very much against a massive change in the concept, I've always just stuck down 10 hours undocumented private study - on the understanding I do far more but CBA to write it down. Time spent on here could be counted, but I never have.

What might be an idea was to only allow 66% of the total to be made up of any single activity.

From RCVS:

Private, documented, self-directed learning such as
keeping up to date with relevant veterinary journals can be incorporated
into your CPD plans and it is good practice to keep your own personal
record of such activities, perhaps in the form of a learning diary. You
can use the online PDR to keep such notes. Otherwise, undocumented private studies can only account for up to ten hours per year on your CPD Record

Re: online cpd

Another recommendation for The Webinar Vet, Idexx Learning Centre, Boehringer and Bayer. All high quality and relevant to 1st opinion practice. Idexx is US based but as long as you're prepared to translate the units for lab reference rangers it's fine.

I have sometimes wondered whether we will still be able to count webinars as CPD in the future, as there was some discussion recently about the 10 hours informal study . I think we need to trust that people are honest about their CPD hours and certainly a letter in this week's Vet Times conveyed nicely how, even though someone isn't officially attending CPD events, they are keeping up to date with current issues and thinking by reading Vet Record, Vet Times etc weekly. I have been to CPD events (especially recently) where I could see delegates browsing their e-mails on their smart phone for approx. 50% of the lecture. I wonder if they are writing down the full hour of CPD for that?

Re: online cpd

Also the IDEXX website has a huge archive of webinars and have live ones almost weekly.

Re: online cpd

Another vote for Webinar Vet.

Also check out the Vetgrad website which lists a lot of CPD online resources - the majority of which are free

Re: online cpd

+1 for Anthony Chadwick and Webinar Vet.
