I know! I thought serum had to be from at least the same species if not from the same animal. Apparently not, specialist opthalmologist told me to use the dog, I did ( with some trepidation) and it was brilliant

Re: Rabbit eye - help needed!

[quote user="Suzanne Kelly"]I forgot about serum. It is nice to find I can still get help and receive enjoyment from vetsurgeon, after reading all the awful back stabbing that goes on here sometimes!

I must be behind the times because I thought penicillins killed rabbits. This rabbit is on enrofloxacin oral currently.

I am trying to persuade the owners to let me debride the abscess but with the risk of rupture, they are not keen.

Re: Rabbit eye - help needed!

I was under the impression that penicillins given systemically do not reach therapeutic levels in ocular tissues (barring methicillin) so I tend to avoid reliance on these for ocular infections. Enrofloxacin reaches therapeutic levels in cornea and anterior chamber (and in tears) so is a good first line for this type of lesion if C&S is not available. I also have had good results in combination with autologous serum drops in rabbits for even very advanced lesions like this but I would be tempted to gently debride the plaque first under light sedation.

Don't use depocillin though. It says on the bottle "do not give to rabbits" so you are not covered. I would use streptacare myself.
The eye may need to come out but I would give it the chance first, You can take it out later but can't put it back.
