Being Easter and all I would appreciate some advice on a case I am treating.
He is a 2yo m/n rabbit. 1.5kg /s 5/10.
I have seen him as a second opinion for severe barbering of his feet. On initial presentation his skin, including

Re: Rabbit: Severe foot chewing

[quote user="CatherineThomas"]

My first thought would be pain could be causing the barbering so I'd want to investigate for anything painful and would start with full xrays and a blood profile. But it sounds like you may have difficulty convincing the owner of that based on their previous behaviour.

If they struggle with giving the baytril you could try septrin instead, so long as there's no osteomyelitis - much tastier and also good for soft tissue infections.

If they wont pay for investigations I'd at least try pain relief, metacam at 0.5mg/kg bid to start with. Don't use any steroids - it can cause severe immunsupression in rabbits, I know cortavance is supposed to have less systemic effects but i still wouldn't risk it in a rabbit.

I would generally agree with you, pain can be very challenging to investigate in rabbits particularly if owner is not open to any investigations. I often find very useful in cases of pododermatitis to move them on paper bedding to change twice daily in order to reduce at the minimum chance of any urine contamination of the lesions.

Re: Rabbit: Severe foot chewing

thanks.

I neglected to say he went onto loxicom this weekend. They seem to be managing the Baytril now they are trying.

I agree re pain. Def a possbility.

Anyone any thoughts on atopic bunnies? HDM allergy? Virbac were also as cautious as you. I am less cautious or the 'roids. Ill give the occasional 24 hour Colvasone for ears .

Re: Rabbit: Severe foot chewing

My first thought would be pain could be causing the barbering so I'd want to investigate for anything painful and would start with full xrays and a blood profile.
