I think that is reasonable and I certainly don't always change the food. The only issue is that it can be difficult to prove that there isn't concurrent gut disease and so if there is any doubt I would assume there was.

But for me - if they have an acute episode and recover uneventfully then I may not change the food. If there is any chronicity to it or recurrence then I would go for a diet trial.

My first post ever on this forum! How exciting!

I agree with Andy, it often difficult to separate pancreas from GI pathology, as concurrent IBD is a common finding. In general term low fat diet seems to be much more important in dog than in cat, so I don't routinely change diet in cat with pancreatitis. I would say that a good quality food with no variation in the ingredients is generally indicated. Any adult or senior diet of Hill's, RCW, Eukanuba and Purina should really do in absence of concurrent IBD.

Re: Cat food - pancreatitis

[quote user="Thomas Johnson"]Is it okay then to not change the diet if the cat has pancreatitis but no evidence of concurrent GI inflammation?
Hi Rebecca,

People tend not to worry so much about the fat content of foods for cats with pancreatitis. In most cases the disease is part of a complex involving concurrent GI inflammation as well - my approach therefore is to use novel protein or hydrolysed diets.

However I have a feeling that any quality cat food is OK so long as it is consistent and the owner isn't feeding plates of chicken as well. I wonder if that is why so many cats are found to have evidence of pancreatitis on post mortem exam even they've ostensibly been asymptomatic.

Re: Cat food - pancreatitis

Anything low fat.
