This is a rescue female poodle that I have seen three times in the past 8 months.
She gets very bad build up of ocular discharge that causes the underlying skin around each medial canthus to become

Re: Poodle eyes
We have also tried vaseline which hasn't appeared to have helped.
This is a more radical clip than we've gone with before so hopefully it will help. However, the dog would have to be sedated every time for further clipping as neither we nor the owners can safely do it conscious.

We have also tried vaseline which hasn't appeared to have helped.

Unfortunately, in this case, the owners appear to be on board for the first few weeks then get lax - run out of Maxitrol, stop bathing the eyes daily etc -then I see it a few more weeks down the line when it's in this state.

Re: Poodle eyes
clipping the face around every 4-6 weeks
Close clip the area first; the discharge is a buildup surely?

Why not do the obvious first, it may only be irritation from hairs irritating the cornea?

Or an anatomical defect so that the tear ducts don't drain the tears.
regular application of some thing like Vaseline to protect the skin from the tears.
Sounds like a good easy cheap obvious first step too.

Re: Poodle eyes

I agree with Joyce, and would add that the dogs i have seen that kept getting this problem tended to have owners who were too busy or too lazy or too filleted to do the necessary maintenance cleansing to prevent it in the first place - that is hardly an acute presentations, surely?

Re: Poodle eyes

I agree biopsy might be sensible, but I'd also be advising clipping the face around every 4-6 weeks and regular application of some thing like Vaseline to protect the skin from the tears.

Re: Poodle eyes

Looks like this needs biopsy to me.
