I have been seeing a nice wee Pig who was noted from birth to have no eyes, he has eyelids/conjunctiva but a very narrow palpebral fissure and no obvious globes so they are presumed missing or very small? His owner regularly checks and cleans

Re: Guinea pig with presume bilateral anopthalmia and socket infection

Thanks everyone. I must admit his abnormal eyes distracted me from thinking of his teeth as being involved so I think that's something needing investigated further. The initial plan was for GA and examine/flush but she lost another pig the week after following GA so his owner is very reluctant especially as at the moment he is showing no signs its affecting him(obviously this will change if it goes untreated). Under GA there would be a good chance for a full dental check and xrays but the palpebral aperture is so small I'm not convinced a better examination would be possible with the equipment available in the practice to examine what exactly is in the socket!

I guess from a longer term outlook point of view xrays to assess the teeth would be helpful and an attempt to have a peek through the eyelids with the smallest otoscope head while he is asleep would be a first step if his owner would agree to it?

Thanks again,

It would be useful to hold off antibiotic treatment beforehand if possible so culture samples can be collected.

Microphthalmos and anophthalmos are both reported in GPs, with microphthalmos being the more common (incidence of 1.5% compared to 0.1% for anophthalmos) so it is theoretically more likely there is some ocular tissue there.

Piggie needs a ga for a proper exam.

If there really are no globes then you have to address what sort of lacrimal apparatus is present and remove it as if you were doing an enucleation. It is likely that this will be a continual issue until you sort it surgically.

Head X-rays to look for tooth root elongation pressing on the NLD

Post some pics/rads to help us help you :-)

goodluck

Re: Guinea pig with presume bilateral anopthalmia and socket infection

I'd GA, swab for c&s, flush and exam. Then go from there.

I would consider packing the sockets with fucithalmic... seems sensible to me.
