&lt;p&gt;I find that people frequently come in with there sick dog or cat assuming that it has been poisoned. In the majority of cases it turns out that other explanations are much more likely. If the police were obliged to pay for post-mortem examinations or toxicology testing on all SUSPECTED poisonings the costs would be astronomical...&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Why should the police or the taxpayer pay for a post mortem exam? &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It could be that no crime has been commited. Killing a dog is not as a criminal offence, although causing unnecessary suffering, or permitting unnecessary suffering is. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Toxicology results are not known yet, may not have even been poisoned at all??&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I had a puppy once that had allegedly been force fed ecstasy and amphetamines. Posted on here for possible places to test blood/urine, local hospitals were one option.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I ended up sending a sample to Idexx, who send it to a 3rd party for mass spectrometry.&lt;/p&gt;
