I have already posted this topic on ExoticDVM and BVZS Forum, but so far I didn't receive any reply...
In the past I used DHPPi (for the distemper only) and Tricat (for panleucopenia part) to vaccinate palm civets and I would like to know

Re: Palm civet vaccination protocol

No problem - see you at the bar in Paris!

Re: Palm civet vaccination protocol

Finally a reply (and that makes sense)...!!!!!! :-D

Thank you very much Marie!

I owe you a beer if we'll meet in Paris at the ICARE!!!!! :-)

We just focus on distemper as the main risk in the W Midlands. I give a full dose of DHP (as there is no single distemper option) after 12wks of age, boost every 2 years. I haven't seen adverse effects in any of the exotic mammals we vaccinate for distemper but I always have them wait 20mins after vaccine just in case.

I have considered the feline panleukopaenia but I am less comfortable giving this as there is much less data behind clinical justification or safe usage and so I haven't routinely vaccinated civets or skunks with this.

Marie

Re: Palm civet vaccination protocol

Hi Sergio,

I'd have to google to find out what a palm civet is, but as no-one else has said anything helpful do-date I may as well kick off the chat...

... I'd personally be skeptical about using polyvalent modified live vaccines in an exotic species.

Could the worst case scenario be introduction and modification of a novel pathogen by cycling it through a different species like this or am I a bit melodramatic?

I would also suspect that it depends on the disease risk posed, which will be a geographic and site specific risk-analysis rather than one size fits all I'd reckon.

Is there a risk of a wildlife reservoir of distemper or panleukopenia in the area? Treating dogs/cats in Ireland I personally haven't seen a case of distemper for decades, but still see panleukopenia.

If so, then what is biosecurity like and what risk would, say, a local feral cat population with panleukopenia pose?

Is this a closed [insert correct collective noun] or are there frequent introductions from sources with unknown health-status? Can the diseases be screened for reliably and new introductions quarantined?

If vaccination for these diseases truly is a recommended protocol and sensible in light of the specifics of your situation, then I'd wonder whether using inactivated products (such as Fevaxyn iCHP for the panleukopenia) in preference to live vaccines, or "less"-polyvalent vaccines such as DHP rather than DHPPi for the distemper (though I'd still be very uncomfortable about that suggestion... sounds like a great way to introduce a new parvovirus to me)?

Just some random thoughts.
