Formation of blood filled " sinusoids " within the liver parenchyma. Cause unknown but thought to be secondary to infections / drugs / toxins, anything that might cause hepatocellular necrosis.

This is similar to rabbit VHD - that is also a calicivirus. These were all in multi-cat/rescue/colony situations which might fit your client's set-up. Swabbing for FCV is probably fruitless as in a multi-cat household there are likely to carriers and the FCH viruses are antigenically indistinguishable from benign form to the hyper-acute variety. Plus all the cats in that situation were vaccinated anyway so Ab titres revealed little AFAIR. Other symptoms included ulcers on skin and extremities due to vascular necrosis but not necessarily classical FCV oral ulceration.

All this is unlikely but excellent hygiene including sterilising feeding bowls and litter trays as well as personal hygiene between cats would be essential and probably unobtainable in your client's situation. I would have thought that if there was a coagulation problem there would have been bleeding during the dentals and that sort of pathology sounds too chronic.

How many tests you do depends on funds so you can give the client options its up to them if they can afford them. But the moral if any is the wisdom of keeping multi-cat households with the stress and cross-infection that will occur!

Re: Hepatic bleed

Any pre op bloods done?
