Case in question is a 13 week old Weimaraner. About a week after her first vaccination at 11 weeks she appears to have developed hypertrophic osteodystrophy.

I thought it was large black and tan short coats i.e. Rotties and Dobies which just happen to be German!

Don't get me going on the failure of vaccine response again or you'll all give up the will to live. Suffice to say I recommend no dog has a second vaccine before 12 weeks. If they do then I recommend a third at 16 weeks as essential and that applies to the above breeds whatever age they complete. I advise that all pups whatever breed and whatever age of completion have a third one but don't insist.

As for the OP I would be pretty certain the problem was in no way related to tee vaccination, its just not the sort of vaccine reaction you'd expect to see.

Re: Vaccinating puppy after vaccine reaction

We try to get people to have a three part course, 8, 10 or 12 weeks, then parvo only between 16 and 18 weeks. I never recommend a 10 week finish so those that want a 'cheaper' option should be at 8 and 12 weeks. Yet to have anyone demand a 10 week finish once the basics are explained.

We do get reactions (neck pain, quiet and a bit miserable) on occasions and I am close to being convinced the toy breeds are over represented. The problem is that most of our tiny dogs still head out across the forest in the same way proper dogs do. This puts them at the same risk as others so they get lepto vaccinations. I would feel a bit better if Zoetis would bring their 4 strain lepto vaccine to the UK. The well documented lepto outbreak appears to have been bratislava .

Or just give lepto and parvo vaccine, since the distemper component is the one thought to be responsible. A lot depends on the parvo incidence in your area.

There has been Distemper in South Wales and rumoured to be a case in Bristol. Together with a dreadful panleukopenia outbreak in numerous rescue centres again in South Wales, I'm no longer putting these diseases at the bottom of the differential list.

I spoke to a vet last week who'd looked into vaccine reactions as feeling pressured to go for L4 as there is an awful lot on social media now. He said that lepto was the most responsible for vaccine reactions, anyone else with any thoughts?

A few years ago the clinic I was working at did a 10 week finish, then parvo hit the area in a major way (around 200 cases over the summer). We saw 5 dogs develop parvo after the early finish, and have since seen one more which didn't come back for it's 16 week vax despite our advice. Never seen a case with a 16 week final vaccination so we will always recommend the later finish.

As for whether the injection caused the problem in this dog, it's a disease of young, growing dogs, therefore is going to occur close to when they are vaccinated. Makes it very hard to confirm the cause. I guess it's time for a bit of balancing the risks of the vaccine vs the risk of the disease and try to find the balance.

The advise given by vaccine manufacturers is only as good as the feedback given. So if every vet got this every 10 years and failed to report that's 1000 cases annually and a cause for concern.

For Nobivac the datasheet says

Primary course vaccination: A single injection should establish active immunity in dogs of 10 weeks of age or older. Where earlier protection is required a first dose may be given to puppies from 6 weeks of age, but because maternally derived passive antibody can interfere with the response to vaccination a final dose should be given 2–4 weeks later i.e. at 10 weeks of age or older.

Therefore in your case only the L2 and L4 needs repeating and these are inactivated, so i would be comfortable giving a second but only after contacting MSD.
