These pictures are of a 3 year old shah pei. She developed these excessive skin folds about a year ago. They are not inflamed or sore just extremely prominent, like little skirts around the back legs. The owner was asking about surgical

Re: Shah Pei legs what would you do with this?

Absolutely don't consider even touching that with a knife. Skin like that in those areas is normal for a Shar Pei. Surgery would be a nightmare of subcutaneous mucin and potential wound break down, and would be of no benefit to the dog whatsoever. Would also have to be reported as an appearance-altering procedure, wouldn't it?

Re: Shah Pei legs what would you do with this?

surgery or now there would still need to be management on an ongoing basis or post surgery they would gen up back again. because as you say the circumferential nature of the skin I think I wouldn't touch these with someone elses barge pole!

Re: Shah Pei legs what would you do with this?

The skin folds are actually pretty clean at the moment. Nice and dry and not inflamed or sore. Obviously management of any dermatitis will be ongoing. I mainly wanted to know if anyone would consider surgery and if so how they would go about it. The owner wanted to know if there was anything to be done other than just management.

Re: Shah Pei legs what would you do with this?

[quote user="Martin Atkinson"]

I once removed a large flap of skin from a Shar-Pei's neck because he was unable to eat properly - every time he put his head down, the skin flopped down and covered the food bowl..... Agree with looking for demodex/malassezia. If not bothering the dog and you are happy the skin is not infected/inflamed, then I would probably manage as any other skin fold with regular cleaning etc. I wouldn't touch it with a scalpel either!

Re: Shah Pei legs what would you do with this?

Take a swab from that and it will probably be hooching with Malassezia but I would also look for Demodex.
