A two year old Shih Tzu male entire with anal issues. Anal glands NAD, anus was a bit swollen. Dog keeps turning around and going mad at back end.
IMHO bums are almost always AGs and almost always alone and discrete, again, in my experience [even a siamese cat at Penn which had been examined by the great and good...

But I accept that a hit of triamcilolone in Panolog into the AGs may have cured it rather than the draining and infusion of the AGs.

Easy to do in the consult; [with practice] immediate response but doesn't involve an ancillary test so probably rubbished by modvets.

Re: Anal issues

I would also be looking at atopy.
I am sure I am not the only one who has seen these clinical signs as a manifestation of atopy and/or food-driven pruritic skin disease? Biopsy of the anal skin can reveal the typical changes of allergic skin disease but I don't do that nowadays, instead preferring an exclusion diet first, as you might with a generalised pruritus.

Gerry

[/quote] You beat me to it Gerry. Food allergy has been the major driver in the majority of cases I've seen. Or, it may be behavioural, just attention seeking or some other odd neurological problem.

I've seen this a lot in Staffies including several of my nurse's dogs which were investigated 'til the cows came home and never found a root cause - just mental Staffies probably.

I did radiograph lumbar area, nothing obvious, no reliable back pain either, I know neither are guarantee nothing going on with discs, but would have thought a better responds to preds if something there?? Have been tempted with haemorrhoid cream. Will trial sudacreme. Owner has tried vasciline. No skin lesions, but occasional ear issues therefore tried apoquel as initially thought allergies. owner doesn't reliably check faeces :( Glands hardly full every time I checked smaller than pea size.

Could be sciatic pain, may be worth looking into that a bit....

+1, wish Panolog was still available, although one expert said that's because it had loads of triamcinalone in it ,so the dog or cat got a big hit of the dreaded steroid and the packing was incidental.

Also effective in dogs that suck their stifle joint for no apparent reason [I suppose 'cos they can't reach their anus.]

Re: Anal issues

wash anus after defaecation, and apply sudocrem or Vaseline some dogs super sensitive if anal mucosa irritant.
