He has been told that it would need operating on, but at £3000. its quite a lot of money. I was wondering if anyone has come across this before and

Re: Angular limb disorder advice please

Thank you all for you comments, he is going back to the vets today to discuss it further.
They have advised the ulna needs cutting to allow the radius to grow normally and reset the elbow. It is his front right leg (arm). It all sounds very painful, poor little dog.

Re: Angular limb disorder advice please

we could probably say angular limb deformity will require surgery and not straight forward surgery at that, 5 mth old means it is still growing so possibly would need more than one surgery. depending on type of deformity earlier the surgery done the better ie if a growth plate has closed early, best suggestion as previously mentioned seak orthopod opinion, it doesn't cost 3000 for a consult.

Re: Angular limb disorder advice please

My original reply was meant to be helpful Anthony. I hope I said the same as Tim, but in a different way? The OP seems to have understood what I meant anyway.

Don't worry about it - but for future reference, if you click on the wrong star, simply then click on a different one - only your most recent rating counts!

(NB.... have just been playing with this function .... and worked out you have to go out of the thread and then back into it again to change your rating!)

Re: Angular limb disorder advice please
Nobody can even comment 'generally' when we don't even know which limb is involved.
Well that's unless they give a general reply, which Tim has already done, without harm or ethical violation as far as I can see.

He's even quoted an approximate fee; so hopefully we're all better informed, I am anyway.

I think we can all work out that it isn't an professional opinion or criticism, it's just a general comment ,which to me anyway, is helpful.

On what??? ALL angular limb deformities and their treatments? Could be a lengthy reply!
Crikey, the vet may only have said the dogs leg is at a funny angle
I doubt they would be able to give an estimate of costs if that was the case. I would credit the original vet with a much more thorough assessment!
It's a forum not the RCVS DC!
I don't care whether it is a forum, the DC or the local pub, I wouldn't comment on any case without having the facts available. Nobody can even comment 'generally' when we don't even know which limb is involved.

Re: Angular limb disorder advice please

I think that the problem is as much a lack of information regarding diagnosis (which leg/bone is deformed, which way etc?).
I can comment on a diagnosis without denigrating the unknown vet who has allegedly made the alleged diagnosis and also comment on the condition in general!

Crikey, the vet may only have said the dogs leg is at a funny angle!

I fully appreciate not wanting to comment on another vets diagnosis, my friend is very happy with his vet. It was just more a case of seeing if there were any other suggestions towards possible treatment of it.
I will suggest he maybe considers a specialist opinion.

I'm not an orthopod but I do know that these things can be very difficult to correct...and can sometimes require multiple procedures.

If the owner is concerned about the advice they have already received, they would be best to get a second opinion, preferably from an orthopaedic surgeon. If their own vet is 'only' a GP, it is perfectly reasonable to request to be sent for a specialist opinion, considering the severity and cost.

Good luck!
