Does anyone recommend this for cats in renal failure, with uraemic gastritis?

Stomach acid also has this property. An antacid should hopefully decrease the degree of ulceration, and, gastric ulceration is not only a problem in itself, it will also increase pre-renal uraemia, so becomes a viscious cycle.

There ain't any old boy. But chucking something down a dog's throat just because it looks like antepsin without knowing what function it performs ain't gonna help, in fact in many cases it makes it worse - it actively produces Co2 in a probably already inflamed stomach - quite painful I'd have thought.
But surely it is performing a different task and there is a need for both an antacid and a gastro-protectant.
Gaviscon and famotidine are performing the same task, albeit at different points. And neither are gastroprotectants - why not suggest something rather than just being critical?

Re: Peptac/Gaviscon in cats with uraemic gastritis?

we have also been wearing sorry using mucogel - dogs hate it

Re: Peptac/Gaviscon in cats with uraemic gastritis?

We've been using "Mucogel" which contains Aluminium and Magnesium hydroxide. It's meant to be pretty good but unfortunately it contains peppermint oil and dogs can smell it from the other side of the building.. You also need much larger volumes then dear old Antepsin,

Gaviscon performs an entirely different role to antepsin.

I don't get this current fad for gaviscon. It is primarily an antacid (sodium bicarb) and sodium alginate. The latter forms a 'raft' over stomach contents, preventing reflux and, if reflux does occur, are supposed to coat the oesophagus preventing acid damage. It doesn't protect against ulcers, bleeding, and doesn't bond to exposed mucosa like antepsin. It's pretty useless. And dogs hate it.

Re: Peptac/Gaviscon in cats with uraemic gastritis?
Never used either- try famotidine- once daily so much easier
But surely it is performing a different task and there is a need for both an antacid and a gastro-protectant. I have to say that with the demise of Antepsin there is now a bottle of Gavascon on the shelf but the only patient to have had some so far is me!

PS checked the label and there is no mention of xylotol in it.
