It had been seen 2 months earlier with runny eyes, and had been treated for conjunctivitis with fucithalmic eyedrops. The owner said treatment had`nt made that much difference.
No I just meant hairs from an inch or so away, way down the nose etc., not actually on the eyelid at all, just ordinary facial hair which impinges on the eyelids, often ALL the time.

Re: Runny eyes in yorkie

[quote user="Anthony Todd"]

It couldn't just be the dog's facial hair touching the eyes? I used to trim the hair away in so many of those facially hirsute dogs.

Crikey.... I've just given Anthony 5 stars! Distichiasis/trichiasis/ectopic cilia usually cause corneal irritation if they are the problem. Allergic conjunctivitis is actually quite unusual.

Re: Runny eyes in yorkie

so...

runny eyes = epiphoria.

ephoria = reduced drainage or overproduction of tears or both

STT >25mm/min significant start lookling for cause eg as mentioned above distichia etc or allergic dz.

drainage sound ok from the flushing,

if mild and a Yorkie then may be hard to pin down but likley a combination of comformation and trichiasis.

Re: Runny eyes in yorkie

Anecdote alert:

Twice I had a case like this, (one eye, two different dogs) and what worked was doing a ga and just aggressively flushing the daylights out of the affected eye, then piling in a bunch of viscotears or gel tears or something nice and goopy. I never found anything but the eye cleared up, so I assume it was a grain of dirt or a fine hair or something I just didn't see with all the water flushing.

It wasn't an infection, just a nonspecific irritation that I never found the cause of...but it didn't come back!

(so like a good vet, I didn't argue.)

Re: Runny eyes in yorkie

Could be allergy/irritant related, have you looked under magnification for distichia or ectopic cilia? Does it have any entropion? If you can't find any evidence of these things and the dog isn't bothered maybe try persuading the owner to ignore it too (unless it really is quite severe!)
