They're both receptors found on cell surfaces, putting the first one into google immediately gives me Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor Beta. KIT appears to be a tyrosine kinase receptor, but its not clear from what I can see if it is a name or an acronym.

I suspect both are know by their acronym, hence the title of the paper Jerry referenced.

Just spoken to the owner again, apparently the nodule on the nose and the lump between the eyes have gone down again (not 100% resolved but less prominent than before), as the cat is otherwise completely normal they'd rather monitor for now with the option of referral if wanted.

Whoops! Hi Chris, I did mean that I would consider referral to a university with an oncology department. My mistake.

There aren't any papers really reporting clinical outcomes yet. The first one is accepted but not yet available on line. Look out for it in Veterinary and Comparative Oncology if you are interested:

Don't be surprised if it ,or they, just disappear, and allegedly overnight...

Very embarrassing if you schedule surgery and the lesion disappears before you've cut it out...

Happened to me more than once until I treated them as urgent....

Thanks Gerry, I'll see what they want to do. My scan through the literature I can find seems to suggest any treatment attempts may not achieve much anyway. Also for the diagnosis I'm assuming you meant to say you would consider referring a university!

Frustratingly, diagnoses can sometimes (often) only be confirmed b specific immunohistochemical stains which can only be performed on fresh frozen tissue specimens. Honestly, to make a definitive diagnosis, I would not consider referring to your nearest university with an oncology department as they would be the ones most likely to be able to do this for you (if my supposition is correct). Treatment options that have been reported include lomustine, toceranib, radiotherapy and no treatment at all. In fact the longest lived case that I have seen lived for years without therapy.

Yes this must have happened, what I meant was, how did this happen when the nurses have recently been informed about this & should have been packaging them separately!

Thanks for the quick reply Gerry! I'll look that one up - whatever this cat has, it's got to be in the unusual category! Out of interest, what would you recommend to pursue a diagnosis? I'm thinking a biopsy of the swelling between the eyes next if the owner wants to go further, would you recommend any imaging? Also, what would the treatment be if you were to treat?

if you submit an FNA and a formalin biopsy in the same plastic bag, the formalin fumes (even though sealed in the pot) manage to mess up the FNA. I've been told off by labs about this before.
