I confirmed this today. Any dogs/cats on the current 2 yearly schedule do not need a 12m booster they can go straight onto a booster every 3rd year.

At least if you want to bring your pet to France they don't. If the pet passport says the rabies vaccination is valid for three years it's ok with them.

That's France, not the vaccine. They insist on all rabies vaccinatios being done yearly - regardless of scientific evidence.

Interesting that Nobivac Rabies data sheet (for the UK) says - primary vac at 3 m, then 3 yearly boosters. I know that the same vaccine, when I lived in France, had an annual booster requirement.

The customs officers will go by what you put in the passport. they haven't read the 'book'

In most countries with endemic rabies, the first vaccine is given at 3 months, a booster a year later, and thereafter every three years, this schedule makes far more sense than expecting a single dose of a 3 year licensed vaccine to do the job.

the European requirement (in some countries) for annual vaccinations is not based on any provable need, it most likely was chosen because it is easier to administer a yearly requirement than a three yearly one.

For what it's worth the risk of rabies in travelling dogs is minuscule , other health issues are far more likely, but yes it is a horrific illness.

Go on the latest data sheets - wise with everything,but especially with rabies vaccination - for 2 reasons.

The first is that the disease is so horrific.

The second is that customs officers will go absolutely by the book.

Hi Yantha.

We use Rabisin and you are right: in order for you to get the 3 yearly booster protocol you need 1st to have a booster after 1 year.

As far as I know that 's applied to every animal. If for example someone comes tomorrow to get Fluffy's 2-yearly booster you need to explain that the jab you are administering now is only valid for 1 year, after that the next booster will last 3 years.

I think they only changed this protocol about a month ago.
