3yo unvacc neutered male cat.
Presented due to 'unwell'. owner reported that seemed weak, walking strangely and generally odd behaviour - only noticed problem that day.
On initial exam, very obvious subcut oedema over whole

Re: feline anasarca??

+1 having to google anasarca, thanks Gillian

Re: feline anasarca??

Yeah...the GIT is certainly unhappy but due to the amount of protein and blood in the urine, I suspect the PLN came first....and then everything else started failing afterwards. Just a guess though at the moment....

Re: feline anasarca??

Funnily enough have just seen a 6m Dobermann hat rack with dyspnoea and low proteins...not sure yet why dyspnoeic, just about to xray and scan.

I guess other things to consider with hypoproteinaemia and diarrhoea would be malabsorption/maldigestion problems such as EPI and worth checking B12 levels as well as if GIT related protein loss/maldigestion/malabsorption

Re: feline anasarca??

Thanks Kate.. I think an abdominal ultrasound is still definitely worth performing and if you can get an echo as well to rule out cardiac disease that would be great, but it does sound like either PLN/PLE/nephrotic syndrome. I would get a UPC and urine cultureand sediment performed if not done already to evaluate urinary protein loss further, and question the owners more regarding any gi signs eg low grade intermittent vomiting/diarrhoea. What was the cat's bilirbin level? Bilirubin in the urine is very abnormal in cats so that would concern me as well if persistent, what was the cats haematology like? Any signs of anaemia or haemolysis? Otherwise look at liver and pancreas very closely. Cats can also become icteric with anorexia as well. Sounds interesting!

ps had to look up anasarca!! new word for the week!

Re: feline anasarca??

Progress report:

After 3 days of supportive care (fluids, iv antibiosis, steroids and ng feeding) we repeated bloods today. Alb up to 20 and everything else improving. Oedema much less. Urine SG 1.016.

Oh well, may never know exactly what caused it but as long as the little man is improving.....
