CLS solution – now renamed as Kruuse Dental Formula – is the bee's knees in anything iM3 , so should be OK in other machines (checking with manufacturer would be a good idea though).

Oh! I beg yor pardon. CLS suddenly disappeared from the wholesalers, who eventually sent the Kruuse instead. I assumed it was some sort of brand licensing contractual thing.

If you want to put generic chlorhexidine in, use a bit of Hibitane. I can't guarantee it won't corrode or gum up your machinery though. You could always ask the manufacturers.

However.

CLS solution – now renamed as Kruuse Dental Formula – is the bee's knees in anything iM3 , so should be OK in other machines (checking with manufacturer would be a good idea though).

The main reason for putting stuff in the water is to discourage growth of biofilm in the water lines and passages. You'd be surprised at the filth that can grow in there. Filters and things will keep particles and junk out, but they won't stop biofilm forming. You should be using distilled water anyway, but distilled water is not sterile.

I would strongly recommend periodically testing the water bacteriologically with something like the kits from Quality Water Systems

http://www.qwsonline.co.uk/

and, following their guidelines, give the waterlines a deep clean to eliminate biofilm, when necessary.

I wouldn't chance it with hypochlorite. It might be OK, but it might not..... and just a little corrosion could put your expensive machine out of use.

A secondary reason for putting stuff in the water is to use it to "disinfect" the tooth surfaces and pockets as you go. Some experts are keen on this, others less so. Its value is uncertain. It works pretty well on an average-length fairly straightforward treatment, but with prolonged use the chemicals may irritate the soft tissues. You don't have to do it at all, water does a pretty good job. My approach is to use plain water for the initial scaling of big chunks, then usually switch to CLS once we get subgingival or onto areas visibly laden with plaque; definitely use CLS for any pockets that require periodontal bactericidal ultrasonic debridement (PBUD); and use plain water for the final low-powered finishing run round subgingivally. (Pockets that need medication have it applied with a syringe right at the end of the procedure).

Re: antiseptic in scaler water - what to use

Peroxide has been rumoured but don't know what dilution.

Re: antiseptic in scaler water - what to use

I don't understand why people persist in using bottles, mine is and always has been directly connected to the mains supply via an anti-backflow valve or a head tank with an air gap.

Re: antiseptic in scaler water - what to use

With some water lines you can get in line LUER fitting filters which Kent Express have which stops all sorts of crud etc getting into the works and would be good to use in these expensive scalers etc.
